The simple version
The WebP is decoded to raw pixels, flattened onto white wherever it was transparent, then compressed the JPEG way — split into blocks, transformed, and quantized by your quality setting. The result depends on how much detail is genuinely in the image and the quality you pick, not on how compact the original WebP file happened to be.

Conversion decodes the WebP with the browser's native decoder, composites it onto a white background, then encodes to JPEG via canvas.toBlob at your chosen quality. The output size shown is exact, not estimated.

- Any transparency in the source is composited onto solid white and is not recoverable from the JPEG output.
