The simple version

The WebP is decoded to raw pixels, flattened onto white wherever it was transparent, then compressed the JPEG way — split into blocks, transformed, and quantized by your quality setting. Conversion decodes the WebP with the browser's native decoder, composites it onto a white background, then encodes to JPEG via canvas.toBlob at your chosen quality. The output size shown is exact, not estimated.

  • WebP's lossy encoder is generally more efficient than JPEG's at the same visual quality, so converting a lossy WebP to JPG at a matching quality can produce a similarly sized or even slightly larger file — this is expected, not a bug.
  • Any transparency in the source is composited onto solid white and is not recoverable from the JPEG output.
  • Compression results depend on image content — high-detail photos compress less than smooth or flat-colour images at the same quality setting.
