Lowercase Converter
Turn shouty capitals into clean lowercase text in one click.
What is the Lowercase Converter?
The Lowercase Converter does one thing: it turns any text into lowercase. Paste in a heading typed in Caps Lock, a filename, an email address someone capitalised by hand, or a block of ALL CAPS text, and every letter comes back as a small letter — nothing else changes. There is no style picker and no menu, because if you already know you want lowercase, you do not need one. Type or paste, read the result, copy it. It is built for the single most common case-conversion request: turning shouty or inconsistently capitalised text into clean lowercase, fast.
Most people reach for it while cleaning up pasted text, preparing captions, or reformatting a document. Because the work happens on your own machine, the result appears the moment you stop typing and there is no queue to wait behind. People search for it as lowercase converter, lower case conversion, convert to lowercase among other names, and all of those land here. For the opposite operation, use the Uppercase Converter. It sits alongside 19 other text tools here, so if this one is not the right fit a neighbouring tool usually is.
Why use a free lowercase converter?
One click, no options to choose
There is nothing to configure. Paste text in, lowercase text comes out — faster than opening a multi-option converter for a single, obvious conversion.
Correct on symbols and numbers too
Digits, punctuation and symbols pass through unchanged. Only cased letters are affected, so "Invoice #2024-Q3" becomes "invoice #2024-q3" with the structure intact.
Works on filenames and emails
Useful for normalising email addresses or filenames that get typed with inconsistent capitals — most systems treat these as lowercase by convention anyway.
Handles large blocks of text
Paste a full document. The whole thing converts at once, not word by word.
Runs entirely in your browser
The conversion is plain JavaScript executed on your device. Nothing you paste here is uploaded or logged.
How do you use the Lowercase Converter?
- 1
Paste your text
Add anything from a single word to a full document.
- 2
Read the lowercase result
The conversion happens instantly — there is no button to press and no style to choose.
- 3
Copy it
One click copies the lowercase text to your clipboard.
What does it look like in practice?
Normalising an email address
Input
John.Smith@EXAMPLE.com
Result
john.smith@example.com
Email addresses are technically case-sensitive in the local part, but almost every real-world mail provider treats them as lowercase — normalising avoids duplicate-looking entries in a spreadsheet or database.
Cleaning up a filename
Input
Q3_Financial_REPORT_Final_v2.PDF
Result
q3_financial_report_final_v2.pdf
Lowercase filenames avoid mismatches on case-sensitive filesystems (Linux, most web servers) where "Report.pdf" and "report.pdf" are two different files.
Converting a shouted message
Input
PLEASE SEND THE FILES BY END OF DAY
Result
please send the files by end of day
This removes the all-caps emphasis entirely. If you want normal sentence capitals restored instead of pure lowercase, use the Case Converter's Sentence case option.
How accurate is it?
The conversion follows the Unicode lowercase mapping for every character, which is a one-to-one, deterministic rule for the vast majority of text — the same letter always maps to the same lowercase form.
- Numbers, punctuation and symbols are never touched — only characters with a case (A–Z and accented Latin letters like É, Ñ, Ü) are affected.
- A small number of languages have context-dependent case rules. Turkish "I" lowercases to a dotless "ı", not the dotted "i" used in English, which can look wrong if you are not expecting it — this tool uses the standard (non-Turkish-locale) mapping.
- German ß is already lowercase and stays as ß; it does not need conversion, unlike its uppercase form ẞ/SS.

Which tools relate to the lowercase converter?
The lowercase converter is one of 20 text tools on this site. These are the ones most often used alongside it — either because they handle the next step in the same job, or because they answer a question this tool raises.
Case Converter (Uppercase to Lowercase and more)
If you need more than plain lowercase — Title Case, Sentence case, or a way to compare styles side by side — use the full multi-style converter instead.
Multiple Whitespace Remover
Strip doubled spaces and stray line breaks from pasted text — a common companion cleanup step alongside lowercasing.
Word Counter
Check the length of your text before or after conversion — case changes never affect word or character count, but it is a common next check.
When should you use a lowercase converter?
Because the lowercase converter runs entirely in your browser, it suits work you would not want to hand to a third-party server — client files, unpublished drafts, anything under an NDA. These are the situations people reach for it in most often.
Data cleanup
Normalise emails, usernames and tags pulled from a form or spreadsheet so duplicates by capitalisation collapse into one entry.
File and URL naming
Lowercase filenames and URL slugs avoid case-mismatch bugs on servers where "File.jpg" and "file.jpg" are treated as different files.
Toning down shouty text
Convert a message typed entirely in capitals back to a normal, readable tone before forwarding or publishing it.
