PDF to Word
Work on your PDF locally. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.
What is the PDF to Word?
PDF to Word extracts the selectable text from a PDF and rebuilds it as a real, editable .docx file — one you can open directly in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. It is not a pixel-perfect layout converter: each PDF page becomes a heading and a series of plain paragraphs in the same reading order as the original, with a page break between pages, but fonts, columns, tables and exact positioning are not reproduced. Everything runs in your browser, so a confidential contract or report is read, converted and turned into a .docx entirely on your own device — it is never uploaded anywhere.
This makes it a genuinely useful shortcut for getting text out of a PDF and into an editable format, not a substitute for professional document-recreation software. If a PDF is scanned — a photographed or scanned page saved as an image, with no underlying text layer — this tool has nothing to extract from it. Run it through an OCR tool first to get text out of a scan.
Why use a free pdf to word?
Produces a real, editable .docx
The output is a genuine Word document you can edit, not a PDF renamed with a different extension — every extracted line becomes an editable paragraph.
Nothing is uploaded
Text extraction and document building both happen in your browser. A confidential document never leaves your device during conversion.
Preserves reading order
Text is grouped into rows by vertical position and read left to right, so multi-column layouts and tables come out in a sensible order rather than jumbled.
Honest about what it does not do
The tool tells you upfront that fonts, columns, tables and exact layout are not reproduced — so you know to expect a reformatting pass afterward, rather than being surprised by it.
Word and page counts included
The result shows page count, word count and final file size before you download, so you can sanity-check the extraction worked as expected.
How do you use the PDF to Word?
- 1
Drop in your PDF
The tool reads every page and extracts its selectable text in top-to-bottom, left-to-right reading order.
- 2
Wait for the .docx to build
A progress bar shows page-by-page extraction, then the .docx file is assembled with a heading and page break for each original page.
- 3
Check the stats
Page count, word count and file size are shown so you can quickly confirm text was actually found — a suspiciously low word count usually means the PDF was scanned.
- 4
Download the Word document
Save the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice to reformat as needed.
What does it look like in practice?
A 5-page text-based contract
Input
5-page PDF, plain body text, no images
Result
.docx with 5 headed sections, about 1,200 words, roughly 28 KB
Each page becomes a "Page N" heading followed by its paragraphs, in the same order the text appeared in the PDF.
A 10-page scanned certificate
Input
10-page PDF made of scanned images, no text layer
Result
.docx with 10 "Page N" headings, each followed by "(no extractable text on this page)"
There is no text to extract from an image-only PDF. Run it through an OCR tool first, then convert the OCR output.
How accurate is it?
This extracts text and rebuilds it as plain paragraphs, one heading and page break per original page — it is not a layout-preserving conversion. Fonts, font sizes, columns, tables and exact positioning from the PDF are not reproduced; everything comes out as the same default paragraph style.
- Text is grouped into rows by vertical position, then ordered left to right within each row — this handles simple single-column and basic multi-column layouts reasonably well, but complex layouts (magazine-style columns, overlapping text boxes) can come out of order.
- Tables are not reconstructed as Word tables — table content is extracted as plain text rows and needs to be rebuilt as a table manually, or with the dedicated PDF to Excel tool if the table structure matters.
- Scanned or image-only PDFs have no selectable text layer at all, so nothing is extracted from them. Run them through an OCR tool first — see /ocr-online/ — then convert the OCR-recognized text.
- Word count in the result is a simple whitespace-based count of the extracted text, useful as a sanity check rather than a precise editorial word count.
