Overview

What is the Split PDF?

Split PDF breaks one PDF into several smaller files, with a visual page-by-page picker so you choose exactly where each new file starts. You can split every page into its own file, split every N pages into equal chunks, or click a scissors icon between any two page thumbnails to set a custom split point. Everything runs in your browser: pages are rendered as thumbnails locally, the split files are built locally, and the result downloads as a .zip when there is more than one output file. Nothing is uploaded.

This is a page-range tool, not a content filter — it separates an existing PDF into pieces along page boundaries. If you want to delete specific pages instead of splitting the file into parts, use Remove PDF Pages.

Benefits

Why use a free split pdf?

Visual page picker, not a blind page-number input

Every page renders as a thumbnail before you split, so you can see exactly what is on each page rather than guessing from page numbers.

Three ways to split

Split every page into its own file, split into equal chunks of N pages, or click custom split points between any two pages — mix and match as needed.

One click for multi-file downloads

When a split produces more than one file, they are bundled into a single .zip so you are not clicking "download" a dozen times.

Nothing leaves your device

Thumbnail rendering and the actual split both happen locally in the browser — your PDF is never sent to a server.

Guide

How do you use the Split PDF?

  1. 1

    Drop in your PDF

The file loads and every page renders as a thumbnail so you can see the whole document at a glance.

  2. 2

    Choose a split method

Click "Split every page" for one file per page, enter a number and click "Apply" for equal-sized chunks, or click the scissors icon between individual pages for a custom split.

  3. 3

    Review the split points

Each thumbnail shows which output file it belongs to, so you can confirm the split before committing.

  4. 4

    Split and download

Click "Split into N files." If there is more than one output file, they download together as a .zip; a single output downloads directly as a PDF.

Examples

What does it look like in practice?

Splitting every page into its own file

Input

A 12-page scanned contract, "Split every page" selected

Result

12 separate one-page PDFs, bundled as contract-split.zip

Useful when each page needs to be filed, signed or shared separately.

Splitting into equal chunks

Input

A 40-page report, "Split every 10 pages" applied

Result

4 files of 10 pages each, bundled as one .zip

Boundaries land automatically at pages 11, 21 and 31 — no manual clicking needed for evenly sized sections.

A custom split at a chapter break

Input

A 25-page document with one manual split point set before page 14

Result

Two files: pages 1–13 and pages 14–25

A single click on the scissors icon between page 13 and page 14 is all that is needed — no page ranges to type.

Accuracy

How accurate is it?

The split is exact and lossless: each output file is built by copying the specified page range directly from the source PDF's internal structure, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution in every resulting file.

  • Page order in each output file matches the source exactly — nothing is reordered or rotated during a split.
  • The first page can never be a split boundary (there is nothing before it to split from); every other page can.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened in the browser and need to be unlocked in a PDF reader first.
  • File names for the outputs are generated from the original filename plus the page range it contains, e.g. report-pages-11-20.pdf.

Applications

When should you use a split pdf?

Because the split pdf runs entirely in your browser, it suits work you would not want to hand to a third-party server — client files, unpublished drafts, anything under an NDA. These are the situations people reach for it in most often.

Breaking up a large scanned document

Split a bulk-scanned batch of forms or receipts into individual one-page files for filing.

Extracting a chapter or section

Pull one section of a longer report or textbook out as its own file to share, without sending the whole document.

Preparing files for size-limited uploads

Split a large PDF into smaller chunks that fit under an email attachment or upload portal's size limit.

Separating combined statements

Split a multi-month bank or utility statement PDF into individual monthly files.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into individual pages?
Drop the file in, click "Split every page," then click "Split into N files." Each page becomes its own one-page PDF, downloaded together as a .zip.
Can I split a PDF into custom sections instead of equal chunks?
Yes. Click the scissors icon that appears between any two page thumbnails to mark a split point there. You can set as many custom split points as you like, mixing manual clicks with the "every N pages" option.
Does splitting reduce the quality of the pages?
No. Each output file is built by copying the original page content directly, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution — nothing is rendered to an image or re-compressed.
Why did I get a .zip file instead of a PDF?
Whenever a split produces more than one output file, they are bundled into a single .zip so you can download them all at once. A split that produces exactly one file downloads directly as a PDF instead.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server to be split?
No. Thumbnail rendering and the actual page-splitting both happen in your browser using JavaScript. The file never leaves your device.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not directly — encrypted PDFs can't be opened in the browser. Remove the password in a PDF reader first (or use "Print to PDF" to create an unlocked copy), then upload that version.
Security

Is the split pdf safe to use?

This tool runs entirely inside your browser. Your text, files and settings are processed on your own device and are never uploaded to our servers — there is nothing for us to store, log or leak. You can confirm it yourself: open your browser DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will not see an upload request. It also means the tool keeps working if your connection drops mid-task.
